Silver Rights is Wrong

J. at Silver Rights wrongly assumes that the 'new' Harvey Milk highschool is an affair of segregation. It is rather, an alternative school for gays who have been literally bashed out of the system. If it wasn't for Milk, these kids would not recieve an education. It's very existence is proof of the failure of assimilation for some, but not by choice, but because of the hostility of bashers.

Get it right.

Silver Rights concludes, "Last, but not least, adults must live in non-segregated environments. They should learn to cope with diversity while children instead of being isolated." I have no problem with people learning to "cope" with diversity, though coping implies something intrinsically negative. What gay kids are being forced to do is cope with intolerance, which is a whole 'nother elephant.

Mike, I posted a response to this in a later entry at Silver Rights. Also, the Milk school topic has really taken off at Blogcritics.

Looks like I may have gotten your politics wrong. Maybe you are not a conservative. What do you consider yourself?

I've not paid attention to Blogcritics before, actually never heard of it until now.

I'm Old School, and I think I'm pretty representative of that. That's why people can't figure out whether I'm conservative, progressive or liberal. It's a black thing, sorta. But I would rather be in the conservative pigeonhole if I must be. There's a number of reasons for that, not the least of which is I cannot stand Mumia or anybody who thinks he's worth talking about.
