Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin just sang the National Anthem for the opening of the NBA game this evening. It's rather impossible to forget what country you live in when there's a voice like that singing. Wow!

I'm leaving work. By the time I get home, the Lakers should have brought everybody to their senses.

Or vice versa, meaning the Lakers themselves come to their senses. I say Detroit takes it. History's not in LA's favor. But then what do I know...I hate the Lakers :-)

Side note, is your radio interview on the net?

Coob,
do you want some tissues?
:-D

I want to move out of LA.

I suppose that I can only be happy for the Piston fans including my wife, who is from Detroit and is never going to let me forget this.

Not only that, my poor daughter lost a bet and will have to run up and down the block with my wife's panties on her head.

This was an atrocity. The Pistons treated the Lakers like dogs. If I knew how to Photoshop, I could think of some Abu Ghraibish pictures which would be appropriate right about now.

detroit...WHAT!

I wish that my boy Sam (neighborhood friend...died tragically a few years back) and Ralph Wiley were around to see it.

I'm not sure whether I should bask in the glow of victory or just do a little dance. All I know is, it feels good.

I heard Re-Re was lip-synching. Is that true?

Posted by: Avery at June 16, 2004 05:16 PM

Re-Re was indeed lip-synching (and very badly), but that's not uncommon at games like that one. I read somewhere that even Whitney lip-synched the Anthem Heard 'Round the World.

That being said...GO PISTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have loved Aretha Franklin for so long. I am devastated that she would lip-sync the National Anthem at our game. I had been looking forward to every note almost as much as I had been looking forward to the game. The whole drama for us here in Motown (which we like to call Frotown now) was the match between the giant tinsel town egomaniacs verses the down to earth, Midwestern work ethics of a team called the Pistons. We don’t expect them to get every basket. And we don’t expect Aretha to hit every note. We do, however, expect every one to do the very best they can every minute of the day. It is what makes live performances exciting. It is what they get paid to do. Lip-syncing is no more acceptable then if someone invented a remote controlled basketball that never misses the basket. I am devastated.

Wait a minute. I was still at the office and I couldn't see, but could hear the voice. Are you saying that she was lipsynching for sure? You heard that version before? I know I heard backup singers but Aretha Franklin lipsynching? Hokey smokes!

Posted by: cobb at June 17, 2004 04:56 PM

Sorry to say, it is true. And in a symbolic sort of way, it is devastating that the queen of soul would opt for tape rather then the raw sounds that make real soul (not the bubblegum soul of Motown)the real music. But my son (who is my partner in ludicrosity.com )has written yet another piece on the world as it is today. And as much as Aretha represents a reality in the day to day life for me, Johnny is right to draw me back into the larger global view of life. Sniff Sniff. I'd rather talk Aretha.

Before I even comment on whether Aretha was singing live or not, I would like to say that all these articles and all the posted messages keeping saying that she was singing the National Anthem. If you cannot differenciate the National Anthem from America the Beautiful, then you definitely should not be trusted to decide whether a performance is live or Memorex!!!!!
