FAQ #10 - Is Star Trek racist?

scaa contributors: <see below>

The short answer: Get a life.
The cynical answer: Was it produced in America?
The FAQ answers:

a. Fisrt time in this newsgroup. I have just read a couple of messages regarding star trek and supremacy -- frankly I think some people are reading too much into it. I agree with the person who said to leave star trek alone and go look for racism / supremacy where it really exists.

b. If you would open your eyes you would see that TV and the media is one of the many places that racism / supremacy exists. Also the reason people made comments about star trek is because of it's lack of strong african american characters, and I mean human african american characters. Yet that debate has come and gone, thus let's leave this at that.

c. Oh, man I came late. This is one of my biggest peeves in all of TV, that Star Trek treats blacks as if they have no place in the future. But apparently the conversation is over. Too bad.

Oh, I can't help it. I like Sisko, though he could show some more fire. But every time some ST show or other encounters another planet, it's populated by European-types with funny noses. That's just plain stupid, of course. But it's racist too, unconsciously or not, and it pisses me off. There.
