FAQ 58 - Affluent Black Neighborhoods

Top 50 Metro Areas of Affluent Black Families | All Major Metro Areas (large)

Following the repost of comments by Borland and Whistler are attached US Census data for 1989 for two previously mentioned predominately black affluent neighboorhoods in Los Angeles, Ladera Heights, and View Park, and one predominately black affluent neighborhood outside of Washington, D. C., called Fort Washington.

Thom Borland (tborland@ix.netcom.com) wrote:
: There are blacks living in upper-class neighborhoods. In fact, only
: exclusive country-club neighborhoods are completely void of blacks. But
: there aren't any upper-class neighborhoods that are MOSTLY black.

Billy Whistler (whistler@netcom.com) wrote:

: I can't say it for 'fact' because I have never been there, but I will
: wager that these areas are not predominately black affluent neighborhoods.
: Maybe your idea of 'predominately' and 'affluent' is different than mine.
: If you are saying that 'predominately' means majority and 'affluent'
: means upper middle class or more, then I'm saying that I don't believe it.

:
: I read an article few weeks ago in newspaper describing
: recent census data which showed that the most affluent community
: of AAs was located in the D.C metropolitan area. The most affluent
: county of AAs was in Prince Georges County, MD. This area had
: significantly higher numbers of high imcome black families
: blowing away Atlanta, Chicago, and New York. The DC area
: had more AA families making $100K+ than any other area in
: the country. Most people would never think the DC area was
: was #1 because of the bad rep due to high crime rate, Marion Barry,
: etc. Some of that's true I guess because most of these blacks
: live just outside DC in affluent areas of MD and VA. You'd
: think that these stats would indicate that a lot of single black
: male professionals are in this area, but I still here complaints
: from professional women that this isn't true. Maybe only
: married professional black men live in that area.

marriage and crime has little to do with the black affluence of pg county.
my undestanding of the matter is that the county commissioner is black and
blacks enjoy a lions share of state and local contracts, jobs and the
other types of perks that people who know powerful people get. a lot of
the high tech systems and maintenance contracts etc go to boo companies. i
learned of this at the cbc foundation conference last october. it seems
that this machine has been rolling for some decades now and is getting
more powerful.

They just elected a Black County Executive.

True.

True again.

Mainly funded directly or indirectly because of the presence of the Federal
government in the area. NIST, NASA, NIH, DoD, DoE, CIA, NSA... You should
get the drift. All of these agencies are the prime reason for the high
tech success in the area. IMO, one of the things that should not be
overlooked is affirmative action in action!

But also, PG County is gaining at the expense of D.C. The middle and above
classes of Blacks who leave the district because of crime, school, taxes,
etc, are moving into PG county.

And they are still short changed even with the positive "demographics".
