I like your choices of Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing (haven't seen

To Sleep With Anger so I can't comment), but I strongly have to disagree

with Straight Out of Brooklyn-- I thought it was one of the worst

directed, poorly acted pieces of crap I've seen for some time!

You gotta catch To Sleep With Anger...  Dan Glover is tremendous

and the contrast of generations is well done.

To me, the poor directing/acting was the appeal.  No slicked-

By black films, do mean those directed by black directors, or those that

Well, I don't know about "best" but here are a couple of goodies:

In The Heat of The Night

A Raisin In The Sun  -- with Sidney Poitier

A movie that I haven't seen in years, and one that doesn't even turn up

as the 3 AM TV movie, is "Island In The Sun" with Harry Belafonte and

Dorothy Dandridge.  (Ms. Dandridge was nominated for the Best Actress

Academy Award for her role in Carmen Jones.)  It was a very daring movie

in its day and I would love to see it again.

"Five On The Black Hand Side," because it ushered in films made by African

Americans for African Americans.  The writer director was black and went

on to do a number of other films such as "Truck Turner,"  "Black Belt

Jones" and others. He and his film were pace setters.

'imitation of life'

Wistful (wistful@delphi.com) ever so cleverly scribbled:

:      Please don't show Menace to Society as one of the all time black movies!

:  What's the old movie whre the black maid has to deal with her mixed daughter

: wanting to be white?  Now that was a good movie.  I also like lady sings the

: blues.

:       Oh, and Hollywood shuffle and New Jack City.

One of the top 10 Black films of all time, now being released in home

video format is "NOTHING BUT A MAN" starring Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln,

an uplifting story about a man and a woman whose bond overcomes racial and

class barriers.  Even Siskel and Ebert hailed it as Terrific and gave it

Two Thumbs Up. I enjoyed it back in the 1960's and I just found out about

its release, and, if you're interested, E-Mail Authority1 and I'll let

anyone know when and where to get theirs.  The soundtrack features Stevie

Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, The Miracles, Mary Wells and The

Marvelettes. I remember this as being one of the primary performances of

the era that offered powerful universal themes of love and human

integrity. I enjoyed it then and I'm looking forward to enjoying it again.
