Drumline

A year late, I've seen the flick Drumline. All I want to know, from somebody whose lived on both sides of the fence is whether or not this conversation needs an injection of reality.

I was entertained by this film. That might be easy for somebody like me who has only visited Tennesee State U. and seen the halftime show once, and that time with the benefit of Jack Daniels. But when they were bumping and moving, I was saying Damn! We don't see that at the Rose Parade.

So somebody help me out here with my black pride. Was Dallas Austin faking the funk?

Comments

I'm not sure what you're asking.

I saw Drumline and enjoyed it. I was also just a little disappointed with the bands. They seemed good, but not quite what I'd expected.

Now, mind, I haven't seen much marching, of any kind, in years. Back in high school I marched, and we were pretty good. We did the Cherry Blossom festival one year and there I was blown away by a band I saw in the forming-up area. They were just practicing. What blew me away is that the drumline bounced their sticks off the pavement, caught them, and continued playing without missing a beat -- all in unison. That band was black, and from the South.

I didn't see anything in that movie that had that flash. Of course, maybe I'm exaggerating the flash though the rosy glow of retrospection. I don't know. Still, with that in mind, the comments at IMDB don't see terribly off base to me. I think you should make allowances for local pride and such. Maybe the bands those kids are talking about aren't quite what they represent them to be, but their skepticism about the bands in the movie seems real enough.
