Booker

booker.gif I'm doing a little work on the new League and I stumbled across this picture taken in 1881 of Booker T. Washington. I think that it's an extraordinary shot showing him to be quite a passionate man. I just couldn't pass it without posting it here.

UPDATE: I corrected this to read 1881 (from 1861, thanks to Molotov). 1881 was the founding year of the Tuskeegee Institute. Tuskeegee was founded as a 'Normal School' which looks to be the forerunner of today's public elementary schools.

Booker T. was born in 1856, so that can't be an 1861 shot of him. Perhaps 1881? Nice photo though. Is that at Tuskegee (although the audience looks kinda young to be Tuskegee students)?

Booker was a fascinating man, more complex than he is generally made out to be. I do a lot of work on Du Bois between 1900 and 1910, so I've spent a lot of time reading both men's papers. You may already know that Booker's papers are online here:

Also the text and a recording of his famous 1895 Atlanta Exposition speech is here: http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/88. He made the recording in 1903.
