Sudanese Memetic Milestone

07KRIS.162.jpgToday is a milestone. Make a note of it. The NYT pasted this picture of adorable children on the front page of their web edition. It is at this moment that Americans may start waking up to the reality of suffering on the ground. I rather wish they had done it several months and thousands of refugees ago, but I'm just one political cartoonist.

The next step to watch for in the establishment of this meme for rescue is the naming of a warlord or evildoer. At the very least, you can expect NPR to pickup on the strangeness of the name 'Janjaweed Militia'. As of today there are about 15,000 hits on Google. When it hits 100,000 the meme will have weight.

So what do we make of it? The UN won't ever take action, 'cuz its member states don't ever want to set the precedent for UNcle interfering on THEIR turf.

And the last thing the US needs is another regime change operation.

The looking glass of the media is good, but the bad guys are thumbing their noses at the world.

Sen. John McCain is pushing for the U.S. to fund African Union troops to go and stem the violence. I wonder: where are the armies of all the holier-than-thou Europeans? The U.S. can't do everything.

Christian conservatives and the Bush administration have been pushing the Sudan issue for years now, but U.N. action keeps getting blocked by Arab League nations (surprise!). The reason why liberals haven't howled about this insane human rights violation while going into Abu Ghraib overdrive is because (1) the victims are black; (2) the perpetrators are Arab; and most importantly (3) the U.S. can't be blamed for it. But the liberal NYT may lead the way here for them to acknowledge liberals; hypocrisy.
