The Black Hole

I am not going to post another entry on Cobb until 20 black bloggers agree to start a singularity in the blogospheric universe. I have been provoked, and I can find no good reason not to have a black group blog that will climb into the top of the Ecosphere. Let's see if the blogosphere thinks we're just playful primates.

What!

Okay, Finally The Post For Cobb from Chapomatic
This overlong and unrefined essay has been sitting in my head, unarticulated, for too long. Finally a post on Cobb's blog got me going. This is an area in which I don't feel I can be as precise as I like, so I apologize in advance for screwing it a... [Read More]

Heh.

I accept your challenge, good gentleman. I'm working on a long post right now.

Posted by: Juliette at September 3, 2004 11:44 AM

I assume it will be of mixed ideology. Some folks don't like that I'm a politically-oriented black conservative, and that's fine. I'll participate if other bloggers are civil enough not to fling the ad hominem near those they disgree with. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive about this, but being insulted is not on my to-do list.

Other than that, I think a group blog is a good idea, actually.

Posted by: La Shawn at September 3, 2004 11:47 AM

I am down, if I am invited.

Posted by: David Anderson at September 3, 2004 12:16 PM

I'm down. Got stuff in the works, too.

I'd join, but I'm not black... good luck!

David, you blog? What's your URL? The one posted goes to a "fat cow" site.

I'm not all that eloquent or researched, but I am opinionated. I'm in. (I'll just have to break out of my shell, I guess.)

I am a singularity unto myself - not sure that's a good thing - and still a dang'd rodent!

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for that "adorable litte" prefix. My Napoleonic Dementia status just doesn't allow much for that. Why don't they have something called Ugly Gator Bait or Icky Sewer Rat? I mean, what is this ador...uh...hello?

Dang it. Did it again!

Count me in. But, don't be surprised when the waste material hits the air circulating device, Cobb. If we are not 'supposed to' say we are proud of the achievements of African-Americans, ie., Earl's experience, I doubt we are 'supposed to' have an African-American group blog, either.

If anyone is looking for an idea, here is something I recently blogged for Silver Rights. The entry it is based on, a blogger's assertion black Americans benefit from slavery every day, is at the first link.

Posted by: Mac Diva at September 3, 2004 04:07 PM

There's no slant. I see it as a big black aggegator. If we compete, we compete with black voices, africana.com. I'd like it to be something in format like Agonist, but it's basically the big black group blog with registered commentors, a chance to prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Left, right, ga, straight, old, new, rich, poor. African America.

Posted by: Cobb at September 3, 2004 04:36 PM

Ahh. Ok, so please ignore email I just sent around. Moving from cocked eyebrow suspicion to tilted head chin rubbing intriguement (?).

Oh, wait. I don't think I'm invited, because the color of my skin isn't...

Well, that's kind of depressing. Maybe 20 "whatever I am" could...

No, guess not that either.

Posted by: Chap at September 4, 2004 07:13 PM

I'm in of course. But Your comments tool never remembers my info.

Posted by: Scott at September 4, 2004 08:40 PM

Checking back. How about logistics? Where would it be hosted? Who would do the heavy lifting, i.e., setting it up, running its operations day-to-day? What would be the format? Would it have advertising? Etc.

And, oh, how will we respond to the 'separatists' issue which has already been raised here? I know for a fact that much of the blog community has a visceral hatred of black people "out of their place." The "separatist' catcall will be just the beginning.

I'm curious to see what type of audiences both the niggerati network and the black hole ultimately bring.

My guess, also, is that while the black hole desires to be inclusive, it will end up being a majoratively black conservative space. I don't think there are enough black "political" bloggers (in that I mean that their sole focus is politics) for those that are out there to feel comfortable sharing the space. The number of divergent voices doesn't seem quite enough for convergence.

crossposting my comment at p6's place.

oh, and not that anyone asked me, but I'm declining participation if the focus is political.

These blog debates only succeed in annoying me and bringing my site unwanted obnoxious tourists.

Posted by: Jason at September 6, 2004 09:46 PM

I'd imagine that to be a self-fulfilling prophesy, now that the word is out that we're here first. The focus is not political it's just that two highly political people, P6 and LaShawn, have declined to be involved primarily because of anticipated friction. That's probably not a fair characterization of it, but that's the 2 dollar headline.

Neither Oliver Willis nor Lynne Johnson responded. I basically mailed out the idea of having the top black bloggers collaborate. I went through the top four species of TTLB's Ecosphere and figured the word would trickle out from there.

I'm obviously disappointed that those two heavy hitters have declined, but it doesn't really make me sweat. I must admit my own little negro is trying to get off my shoulder and into my head saying 'why can't black people just..' but I'm not paying him any mind. On the other hand I think he's been jumping around to a lot of people's shoulders talking that same yang.

It's still just a big black thing, and I expect it to be nice and cultural too, but then again I can't presume to know what other folks see in it. Content is still wide open. And of course you're welcome.

Join the list.

Posted by: cobb at September 6, 2004 10:03 PM

I didn't decline because of anticipated friction. Frankly, I feel I could handle whatever anyone sent my way.

I declined because I had considered this months ago and came to a conclusion on when I would extend a hand across political boundaries.

Posted by: P6 at September 7, 2004 02:10 AM

I stand corrected.

Posted by: cobb at September 7, 2004 08:26 AM

Cobb - I declined primarily because of how content was being defined. I have to be able to write what I want without being told to do it this way, or don't do it that way. And the use of aliases is a problem for me, since I've had unpleasant dealings with someone who uses several and has expressed an interest in joining.

I don't mind the friction associated with such a venture; it's just my view that some discussions will become personal, and I'm not interested in dealing with that on any level. Also, I'm pursuing other writing projects and time is severly limited, as I'm sure everyone knows. I just wanted to elaborate on the comment that included me.

Posted by: LB at September 8, 2004 01:11 PM

Thanks for clearing that up.

I am optimistic that I will have some order of participation from you all.

Posted by: Cobb at September 8, 2004 01:15 PM

Keep the faith, Cobb. I don't exactly loathe the idea. I just want to tread lightly and see what happens.

Posted by: LB at September 8, 2004 02:07 PM
