AQ Talking Point

Cheney, as expected, was pointed and sharp. This was actually an interesting debate, mostly focused on the past. I think Kerry's 'international credibility' position took another lump. But here's the point I think that Kerry Edwards keeps denying really makes them look stupid. Here's the way I think Cheney should have handled it.

Edwards: There is no link between AQ and Saddam.

Cheney: We have killed & captured AQ fighters globally. We knew then that AQ was in 60 countries. We knew then that Iraq was a sponsor of terrorists. Given those two simple facts would you have taken the chance that there was simply no Al Qaeda in Iraq?

Edwards: If we let the inpsectors do their jobs we could have avoided war.

Cheney: The inspectors were unable to do their jobs for 12 years. It wasn't until they had the assistance of American forces on the ground that they were able to uncover every rock. What we know today could not have been known without American troops on the ground. The inspectors and everyone in the UN was. Saddam was in material breach of his obligation to disarm and he had been warned over and over. We weren't going to delay, and we were right not to delay.

Afternoon Reading from ISOU
Some worthy additions to this morning's notes. Dean points out an interesting post on Republican shenadigans. One of these days I am going to get a mention in an article like this one, and when I do, I will be... [Read More]

When Saddam started giving money to the families of the terrorists who blew themselves up killing people in Israel, he became a marked man.

All of that other stuff is fluff.

I think you mean the Suadi's. Which is sort of close the rest of things, ask a question on world terrorism and the answer could be "I think you mean the Saudi's"

I'm curious as to why those persist in the belief Iraq was in 'material breach' of the various UN resolutions, when the facts are revealing themselves to be the only WMDs in the country were in people's heads. And if an unconsummated meeting several years ago constitutes a 'relationship', then I'm a polygamist.

Much of Tuesday night's debate centered on the invasion of Iraq. I understand dick's job is to back up the President and advocate his position with prejudice. The problem is there's no empirical substance in support of the argument in favor of invasion. Cobb provides us with another straw man. Of all the directions where prosecuting the so-called War on Terror should have been expanded, Iraq was a tentative priority.

The proper move for the Administration (which they refuse to take, BTW) is to admit the mistake then explain why the incumbents are the superior choice for resolving the Iraqi incursion. They'll have to drop the 'We're bringing democracy to the Middle East' propaganda along the way for a message linking establishing order in Iraq to America's long-term economic interests.

The current report tht everybody seems to be jumping up and down is based on interviews with... Saddam Hussein.

The material breach is real. Follow the link.

Why would Edwards complain about the security situation in Iran and North Korea, out of all the rogue nations on the planet - or could it be that GWBush did actually pick the Axis of Evil with some real prescience?

The simple fact is that the UN gave as much license as it could. Other nations simply wimped out. You might say that Bush jumped the gun, but you can't say he was in the wrong race or pointed in the wrong direction.
