Satapes

Satapes was a commander of 100 cavalry, whose name is derived from Sat (=100 sad) and Asp (= Horse, Asb). He was an Iranian (Persian) navigator. He was the founder of the horse latitude (Asp latitude).

Satapes was tasked by Xerxes to circumnavigate Africa. He is notable for having passed the Cape of Good Hope, moving all the way around to Cape Verde. The first time he did so, he encountered gorillas, and he later brought back descriptions of them.
